This book was an absolute delight to read. Characters fleshed out enough to actually care about them and a well-researched insight into Depression-era circus life.
As fare as plot goes, there’s probably nothing you haven’t already seen or read a hundred times over in romance novels, or Lifetime Network movies for TV. Same material set against a new backdrop.
Sometimes a good read is just that – a good read. It doesn’t have to be life-changing – just entertaining. I love how it was all told as a personal history.
I do appreciate the author’s exhaustive research to get the circus terms right. My only (small) complaint (and maybe I missed something) was that not all the terms were defined for the reader. It does not take away from the storyline at all.

Looking at the subject matter of this book, I figured it’d be the same ol’, same ol’–don’t try to be “cool”, just accept who you are and learn to like yourself. The Heart Of Cool isn’t so nearly so dull as that! Bobby starts off simply imitating his cool idol, Harry, but then truly transforms into someone so cool he’s nice and chilled. Bobby eventually finds he doesn’t need to show off to prove anything to the other kids–he knows he’s cool. This is what kid’s books should be: fun!
The Heart Of Cool

Thanks to a permanently detached tailbone, I cannot ride bikes equipted with regular seats. This is my second Cloud 9 seat: the last was narrower, with the lycra cover. As I ride to do all of my errands as well as for fun, comfort and durability are both key. This seat is wider than the regular ones, which is better for me on long runs. The leather-like cover promises longer wear as well. If you suffer discomfort on regular bike seats, the deep, vented groove will be a revelation. In concert with the gel padding and shock absorbers, this seat is heaven on long rides.
Be aware, it is not designed to be used with an underseat bag. I was able to mount my underseat bag only after making some minor modifications.

This is a very informative piece of history, and extremely well written. Not particularly a “happy” book, but certainly a cannot-put-down read.
Mafalda Friends English Edition

I’m having trouble finishing this book. I just want it to be done with. I knew it was young adult fiction. But, there was so much hype with the movie and the series of books that I thought I would read the first one. It’s just not well written and very predictable.

Moreover, the characters leave a lot to be desired. There is a mother who reviewed the book stating that she was concerned about young girls reading and falling in love with an overbearing, controlling man rather than a vampire. I agree with her review. I had the same thoughts about the male in this book. I would not want my daughter reading this as a love story.

I would not recommend this book to any woman – young or old. I am truly disappointed.
