I hadn’t heard of The Help until about a month ago. Now, it resides in my mind as one of the best books I have ever read. It is rare that I am hooked on a book after only reading the first chapter, but Stockett’s ability to capture me as a reader (and everyone else I know who’s read this book) is amazing!

The Help begins with Aibileen, one of three voices in the novel. You quickly learn that Aibileen is a Southern black woman with a huge heart and a lot of spunk. While she wouldn’t dare speak to the white people she works for with disrespect, she doesn’t hold back in the chapters she narrates. She is bothered by the way Miss Leefolt, the white woman she works for, ignores her daughter, Mae Mobley, to worry about more important things, like her hair! Within the first chapter I wanted to cry and laugh. Cry because of the love Aibileen has for a white baby who yearns for her mother’s attention, and laugh because of Aibileen’s attitude and wisdom.

A second voice in The Help is Miss Skeeter, Miss Leefolt’s friend. Skeeter really wants to be a writer, but can’t find a job without having any professional writing experience. She is advised by Miss Stein, a publisher, to write about something meaningful, something that no one else will write about. This is when Skeeter is inspired to write a book about what it is like to be a black woman in Jackson, Mississippi working for a white family as “the help”. During this time in Jackson (the early 1960s), blacks were being treated as inferior to whites. While Skeeter has the idea to write the book from the help’s perspective, she is directed by Stein to interview at least a dozen black maids for the book to be a true account of what it’s like to be a black maid in Jackson. Due to the segregation of blacks and white at this time, these interviews obviously pose a problem and help drive the conflict throughout Stockett’s novel.

Now that I have this, I don’t have to go back over my routes to see how far I’ve gone. Not the easiest to set all my preferred functions, but I love having it. Holds its charge better than expected. Good quality for a good price, I plan to run with it for years.

I was looking for a good vacuum to pick up pet hair at a local department store and a young man who was there to also purchase a vacuum convinced me not to buy the $600 machine but to look at the Hoover Tempo Widepath. Unfortunately the store didn’t have the model so I went home, got on line, and found this model on Amazon just by typing in “Best vacuum for pet hair”. Since the reviews were fantastic, I bought two vacuums, belts, and bags. One is for my son and future daughter in law. We were all totally impressed by the suction of this machine, and have filled up several bags already! The only reasons for giving a 4 star rating is that I thought it had a full bag indicator on it and it didn’t, it is noisy, and the hose is very short. I would pick this vacuum over a $500-$600 model any day!!

An amazing book! It was recommended by a friend, and so I thought I would read it to see if it would give me any new insights into the age-old questions about the purpose of life etc. I didn’t really know what to expect, but it blew me away! It’s a conversation between an ordinary man called Neale Donald Walsch (with a lot of problems in his life) and God (you may not accept that it’s ‘God’ talking, but then that’s up to you) and it’s written in a very easy to read style. From the first page it had me riveted and I couldn’t put it down. You learn about the importance of trusting your feelings, expressing appreciation, how all human feelings are rooted in either fear or love and that we have been taught to live in fear. As it says in the book ‘precious little is said about the glory of the most loving’, but an awful lot is said in our society about being ‘better’, ’stronger’ and ‘cleverer’ than others. Fear motivates us to be this, because we don’t want to be considered failures. All the big questions are answered: why are we here? Why is there evil in the world? Is there sin? Is there a hell? If so, what is it? Why do things happen as they do? What happens when you die? How can I have successful relationships? Is having a lot of money a bad thing? And inbetween times there’s also humour, because we’re told that God has a great sense of humour!

So many of my questions were answered in a totally new way (going to church or reading the Bible had never given me answers like these) and not only did they make sense to me, they were also liberating! If you’re remotely curious about any of the above questions, then I would encourage you to read this book and decide for yourself whether the answers are for you or not.

Bought Wii for my husband who enjoys video games and thought it would promote more enthusiasm to exercise as I also purchased the Wii Fit Plus, too. He does enjoy this form of exercise.

I promised some students I would give the “Twilight” series a try this summer, so I borrowed my niece’s copy and gave it a try. While I did enjoy the book, I don’t think I’ll finish the series. I could definitely see adolescent girls love for this book. It is actually a rather chaste love story. Great for girls who need innocent romance and a bit of rebellion. I would have probably been hooked back in the day. Having been to Forks (in the 80’s) it was good to visualize that beautiful area. I’m not big on vampires, although this really didn’t seem like a vampire book. More a version of the white knight rescuing. It is really cool how many different ages of people I have spoken with who love the series. Don’t know if I Netflix the movie or not…

Instructions loop around but don’t resolve the problem with connecting to the internet. Can waste way too much time on this. Don’t even want to try doing this all again with tech support. Much more fruitful to bag it and do more constructive things.
